First Impressions Are the Furriest Things
How I learned to stop worrying and enjoy the fluffy writing times
First posts are usually about the person writing it, but I thought I’d make mine a little special by introducing one of my partners in prose. He’s also the latest addition in a long line of writing buddies I’ve had over the years.
I present to you…George the Cat II. His obligatory ‘II’ is because one of my siblings currently has a cat of the same name. And colors. And temperament. They’re both a little off their rocker.
This particular George arrived in my life last May. I live in a rural neck of the woods, and some black-hearted monster dumped him onto my road. He managed to make his way down my 1/4 mile driveway and popped up at my living room window one dark morning.
I had been sleeping on the couch because another unnamed cat (cough-Tuxi-cough) had sprayed my bed. Another cat perched above my head started growling out the window at 3 am. I sat up and came face to chubby face with this adorable fuzzball.
Needless to say, he took off. I didn’t see him again for two days, when I spotted him trying to hunt mice thirty yards from the house. My attempt to get close ended with him slinking off into the brush, but I left him a bowl of cat food. Somebody ate it, but I couldn’t tell if it was him or one of my own fiends.
Then, a few days later, I spotted him at my detached garage a mere sixty feet from the house. Progress had been made! I also had a plan. Canned cat food. I dumped a cup of the stuff into a bowl and set it in front of the garage door. He wouldn’t approach when I was near, so I sat on my back porch and watched. He slunk out, gorged himself, and slunk away. Another day went by of me feeding the trash compactor.
And then, on the afternoon of the second day, he just…walked up to me. He was meowing like he’d always known me. And thus a bond was born. A bond of ‘feed me now’ and ‘I want to tickle your nose with my tail.’
And also, some nice company. The chair in the picture is where I write. Somehow, through sheer perseverance, he’s able to fit in beside me. Usually on his back, curled up like a shrimp with his paws on his stomach. His soft purr rumbles through me.
It’s a nice way to pass the typing time.
And yes, one ear is smaller than the other. He got into a fight with…something, a few days after he adopted me. Stitches and tucking were necessary.
Anyway, say hello to George, and thank you for reading his story! I’ll have more stories about him and me in future posts, so stay tuned!
Oh, and before you go, George would like to remind you that his adopted human has a completed romantasy series now available!
